Real Madrid Baloncesto – New look in 2018-19
Real Madrid coach Pablo Laso has been at the helm of the team since 2011. During that time, he has led Real Madrid to four EuroLeague finals, winning two, along with winning four Spanish La Liga trophies. His presence on the bench has kept Real Madrid winning with some of the continent’s best talent. This season will see some changes in player personnel, however.
Point guard Luka Doncic joined the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA for €2 million. The 19-year-old is expected to excel in the NBA once he gets a year or two under his belt. Doncic was the EuroLeague and La Liga Most Valuable Player in 2018. The point guard averaged 14.25 points per game in EuroLeague and Spanish league basketball combined. He will be a big miss as Doncic was just becoming one of the best players in Europe.
Real Madrid still have an assortment of top-quality basketball players. With a projected starting five of former Cleveland Cavaliers’ player Edy Tavares, one-time Los Angeles Clippers’ forward Trey Thompkins, ex-Denver Nuggets player Rudy Fernandez, Fabien Causeur, and Sergio Llull, Real Madrid will be difficult to beat.
Real Madrid Baloncesto – Return of an elite player
Point guard Sergio Llull’s injuries in 2017-18 allowed Luka Doncic to shine and it enabled his move to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Llull did return to the Real Madrid team for the EuroLeague Final Four and helped the team win its 10th title despite missing much of the season.
Now more than a season removed from winning the EuroLeague Most Valuable Player honours, Llull is back and ready to lead Los Blancos. Due to injuries, Llull only averaged 10.0 points per game in 2017-18, which was his lowest total in six seasons.
With Doncic in the United States, Llull will return as the true leader of Real Madrid. The basketball team needs him to find the great form he showed prior to last season’s injury ravaged season.
Real Madrid Baloncesto – Are Real Madrid EuroLeague favourites?
Despite winning four EuroLeague titles under Laso, Real Madrid start the EuroLeague season as leading sportsbooks’ third favourite. The Spanish club are listed behind Russia’s CSKA Moscow and Turkey’s Fenerbahce. Listed at 5/1 by sportsbooks to lift the European Cup, Real Madrid are a great price to win an 11th title.
Real Madrid haven’t won the European Cup in back to back seasons since 1987-88 and 1988-1989. Winning the EuroLeague this season would mark the 30th anniversary of the last time the club won it in consecutive years.
Real Madrid tip off their basketball season on September 30 at the WIZnik Center in Madrid.
