Serbian legends worried about Serbian Basketball

Few days ago, at September 8, Estonia defeated Serbia in Game 9 of Qualifications for EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia, and this defeat caused a lot of comments of coaches, players, fans, but Basketball legends as well.

Once again it was proved that Basketball is one of the most popular sport in Serbia but not because of good results of National team, but because of bad performances and results and critical situation.

On several discussion boards and forums we could read so many negative comments or better say comments full of anger because of these bad results, but even more because of disrespects to National flag.

All fans want wins, but even if you cannot win, at least you can do your best and “die” on the court in trying. Obviously Serbian players lost some winning mentality.

Some of Basketball legends as Borislav Stankovic and Ranko Zeravica in their interviews for Serbian media called this situation as catastrophe and even said that possible defeat against Israel would write tragedy.

Borislav Stankovic honorable President of Basketball federation of Serbia and for years the best ambassador of Serbian Basketball as FIBA’s Secretary General from 1976 to 2002 said about this situation:

“Defeat will be catastrophic for Serbian Basketball and Serbian National team as well. Situation with National team became almost tragic. If we do not qualify to European Championship, we will lose chances for World Championship and maybe even for next Olympic games.”

He continues: “Basketball is very popular sport in Serbia and played in almost every town. We have a lot of young perspective players, so it would be wrong to talk about general crisis.”

Ranko Zeravica, legendary Serbian coach said: “I don’t want even to think about it. I am already nervous about this situation.”

He continues: “Why the best Serbian player in NBA, Darko Milicic don’t play for Serbian National team? I admit that this thing really bother me. With him, we wouldn’t have problems in Qualifications.”

Interesting, it is one of questions that Fans in Serbia asked many times, and most of them also believe that Darko Milicic should be part of this National team, or even leader.

We will see. It is obvious that tomorrow is Day D for Serbian Basketball, and I am sure that many things will be different after tomorrow’s game against Israel.

Game Serbia – Israel is scheduled for tomorrow, September 11 at 20.30 in Pionir Sport hall in Belgrade.
