Olympic Games 2012, Men’s Basketball tournament Day 5

2012 london olympic games

The last day of Preliminary phase of Olympic Basketball tournament in Men’s competition. We will see few decisive games today, and I am sure that we will have many reason to enjoy in quality Basketball once again.

However, even it is already known for the most of the teams, it will be interesting to see final list of Quarterfinal contestants.

Group A:

Tunisia 63-76 Lithuania

Pretty same old story for Tunisia, even this was their the best game so far on Olympic Basketball tournament. Too bad it was also their last game on Olympics as they dropped to 0-5 score and will not play in Quarterfinals. They were better team in three quarters but lost again. With this win, Lithuania improved to 2-3 score.

Euroleague champion Sarunas Jasikevicius of FC Barcelona Regal and Darius Songaila led the winners with 13 points apiece. Rimantas Kaukenas of Zalgiris, All-Eurocup guard Ronnie Seibutis of Lietuvos Rytas and Simas Jasaitis of Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar each had 10 for Lithuania.

France 79-73 Nigeria

Expectedly, France wins over Nigeria even it wasn’t an easy game for them. After this win, France improved to 4-1 score, since Nigeria dropped to 1-4 and together with Tunisia will finish their appearance on Olympic Basketball tournament. France finished this game with routine, and played as much as it was necessary to win this game.

Nicolas Batum led the winners with 23 points. Mickael Gelabale of BC Khimki added 11 while Boris Diaw had 10 for France. Chamberlain Oguchi had 35 points on 8-for-14 three-point shooting for Nigeria while Derrick Obasohan added 18.

Argentina 97-126 United States

United States proved once again their dominance as they devastated Argentina with +29, 126-97. United States as expected, finished this Preliminary phase with excellent 5-0 score and they are the main candidate for Gold medal at Olympics Basketball tournament. It is hard to say if any team is able to beat them, especially if they play serious. Argentina even with great players in its roster wan’t even close to beat United States.

Kevin Durant led 6 USA players in double digits with 28 points on 8-of-10 three-point shooting. Lebron James added 18 while Chris Paul had 17 for USA. Former Euroleague winner Manu Ginobili led Argentina with 16 points.

Group B:

Australia 82-80 Russia

Great game and very interesting finish of the game. Patty Mills 3 pointer buzzer-beater brought win to Aussies against Russia. After this win, Australia improved to 3-2 score, and Russia dropped to 4-1. We had great opportunity to watch quality Basketball as both teams played at very high level. I may say deserved win for Australia, as they had more luck in last moments of the game.

Joe Ingles of Regal FC Barcelona paced the winners with 20 points. Mills and three-time Euroleague winner David Andersen added 13 while Matt Dellavedova had 10 for the Boomers. Sasha Kaun of CSKA led Russia with 18 points. Alexey Shved and reigning Euroleague MVP Andrei Kirilenko each added 13 while Timofey Mozgov had 10.

Great Britain 90-58 China

Finally, first win for hosts as Great Britain demolished China in last game of Preliminary phase with +32, 90-58. Despite this win Great Britain finished competition at Olympic Basketball tournament with score of 1 win and 4 losses. Same situation for Chine as they have even worse score of all 5 losses. I am not quite sure if this win brought any satisfaction to Great Britain.

Center Robert Archibald played his last game of his professional career, which included five Euroleague seasons with Scavolini Pesaro, Joventut Badalona and Unicaja Malaga. Kieron Achara led 5 British players in double digits with 16 points.

Spain 82-88 Brazil

Brazil reached its fourth win in this Preliminary phase as they topped Spain tonight with final score of 88-82. I must say that I didn’t expect this even Brazil played very well in all previous games. With this win, Brazil improved to 4-1 score, and Spain dropped to 3-2. Both teams already qualified to Quarterfinals, so this game was important only for starting positions in next phase.

Leandrinho Barbosa led the winners with 23 points. Marquinhos Vieira Sousa added 13 and former All-Euroleague center had 11 for Brazil. Former All-Euroleague forward Pau Gasol led Spain with 25 points.
